The Finger Snap Idea

Have you ever been sitting at your desk trying to figure out a problem your business is facing? Maybe you need an expert to help with a new marketing campaign or a copywriter to clean up some of your email and blog copy. Whatever your need, chances are you’ve already come across someone who can get the task done for you, but do you remember who they are? If not, you might find yourself doing the “finger snap.”

The Finger Snap Idea

So, what is the finger snap idea exactly? It’s pretty straightforward. If you’ve ever been wracking your brain trying to recall a memory of a name, conversation, or business you’ve interacted with, chances are you’ve done the finger snap: it’s literally when you’re sitting there snapping your fingers trying to recall an important piece of information. It might go something like this:

Person A: “We really need someone to come in and clean up our website. It’s just a mess and we’re losing traffic because of it.”

Person B: “Yeah, we do. Hey! Didn’t we talk to someone who offers coding and HTML services? We got an email a while back after we met at that conference? Oh, man, what was their name—?”

Person A: “Oh yeah! I think it was…”

Around here is where you might begin the “snap” as you try to recall the name of the business or representative you spoke with. After a few snaps, the name might come to you:

Person B: “Was it Wilson? *snap* Ah, no,  Wells? *snap* Wilmer?

Person A: *snap!* It was Wheeler!

It may have taken a little while, but finally, the right name floats to the top of your memory, and you now have an option for a service provider. Think of the finger snap as a filter. When your ideal client is looking to buy, are you who they are thinking of when they snap their fingers? And if you are, what next?

The Moment and The Solution

In general, most marketing on the Internet focuses on B2C and B2B relationships. The whole point of B2B marketing is to turn referrals into actual clients, which means that businesses are constantly working on selling engagements to potential clients. In many cases, other companies already have a go-to guy or business, so chances are they aren’t in the market to work with someone new. With that said, something has to go really wrong for a business or client to consider some new blood, and in that moment, will they remember you? If you’ve done the heavy lifting of creating a strong digital presence for yourself and your business, the answer is likely yes!

It’s All Worth It

Since the B2B sales cycle can last anywhere from 6-12 months, you have to make sure you’re doing all you can to ensure your potential clients remember you and your business. Thus, the finger snap idea is only half the battle. Even if they recall your name or the name of your business, it may not lead to anything if you haven’t established a strong digital presence for yourself.  This means you’ve done all of the following:

  • Created and maintained a website

  • Set up your socials and engaged with other businesses and customers through them

  • Launched an email campaign and sent check-in, alert, and greeting emails regularly as well as offered useful updates on products and services

If you’ve done each of these things, your potential customer not only has something to remember you by, but they also have something to find when they go searching for you, whether that means locating one of your emails in their inbox, typing in your name to locate your business website, or following your socials. Each of these outlets gives the potential customer a way to learn more about you and contact you, increasing the likelihood of you working together.

The B2B sales cycle can be a long one, which means you have the task of staying at the forefront of potential customer’s minds. When the finger snap moment happens, having a strong digital presence and adequate communication with potential customers can make the difference between a new client and a lost lead.
